WASHINGTON – In yet another attack on American Indian tribes, President Donald Trump is expected to issue an executive order on Monday, December 4 to dramatically shrink Bears Ears National Monument by 85 percent. Leaked maps indicate the administration’s attack is a stunning affront to Native sovereignty. Bears Ears is the ancestral and spiritual home of the Hopi, Navajo, Ute, Ute Mountain Ute, and Zuni tribes, and is a vital and irreplaceable part of Indigenous culture.

The designation of Bears Ears National Monument was an important step in protecting Indigenous culture and advancing tribal sovereignty which took decades to achieve. In establishing Bears Ears, the Obama administration required an unprecedented system of tribal-federal co-management of the land. This progress is now on the verge of being gutted by President Trump, who has demonstrated little regard or respect for Native nations.

The tribes defending Bears Ears will not stand for this assault on tribal rights, sacred ancestral lands, and local communities for the benefit of corporate interests. Native communities are rallying and taking the fight to the courts. Upcoming actions include:
